International Palaeoseismological Field Workshop: Soft-sediment deformation structures and palaeoseismic phenomena in the South-eastern Baltic Region. Lithuania, 17-21 SEP, 2018

A paleoseismological field workshop on “Soft-sediment deformation structures and palaeoseismic phenomena in the South-eastern Baltic Region” will be held in Lithuania from 17-21 Septmeber, 2018. The workshop is organized by the Lithuanian Geological Survey, the Geological Society of Lithuania, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, and Klaipėda University, Lithuania.

Format and venue

The field workshop will be held in Lithuania and Western Latvia. The main topic regards soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) development caused by glacio-isostatic rebounds and earthquakes. The earthquakes can be reflected in the sedimentary record in layers (seismites) that are characterized by abundant SSDS, commonly including load casts, pseudonodules, ball-and-pillow structures, and genetically associated structures such as flame structures, that give the affected layer (or set of layers) a deformed – sometimes even chaotic – appearance over large lateral distances. The Workshop will focus on detailed sedimentological description and development of SSDS in the Pleistocene and Holocene sediments. In addition, the Workshop offers a forum to all participants for presentations and discussions of recent achievements in Quaternary geology, neotectonics, palaeogeography and glacial processes connected to glacio-isostatic rebound. The Organizing Committee provides five days for field excursions visiting outcrops and quarries in the different areas of Lithuania as well as the Baltic Sea cliffs of Western Latvia with SSDS of seismic and problematic origin. Discussions and oral/poster presentations are scheduled during the late afternoons/evenings. The Workshop will begin and end at Vilnius.

Registration and registration fee

If you are interested in participation, please return the preliminary registration form via e-mail before the 20st December 2017 to Aldona Damušytė (e-mail: aldona.damusyte@lgt.lt). The registration fee is preliminary set at 350-400 EUR. The fee covers field trips transportation, accommodation, full board and conference materials. The final fee depends on the total number of participants. Please note that the registration fee does not cover any health insurance, travel cost, and extra accommodation before and after the Workshop.

Abstracts for oral and poster presentations

Colleagues are invited to submit abstracts relevant to the topic of the Workshop. Abstracts will be published in special conference volume and should not exceed 1 A4 pages (TNR, 12 pt, single line spacing), including figures (jpg) and references.

Important deadlines

  • Preliminary registration – 20th December 2017
  • Second circular, opening of abstract submission and registration – February 2018
  • Deadline for abstracts and registration fee – 30th April 2018
  • End of registration and third circular – June 2018

More information will be given in the second circular in February 2017 to those who will preliminarily register. Official invitations needed to get visa will be sent on your request. For any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Aldona Damušytė (secretary of the Workshop).
