TOPIC: Design Guidelines for Rockfall Fences
ABSTRACT:
The design of rockfall protection interventions is part of the rock mechanics science which needs to be addressed from a geologic and engineering approach. The fact to combine the design with an uncertain and unknown space as the rock mass requires a meticulous statistic analysis. The purpose of this paper is to propose a design guideline for rockfall fences, which will take under consideration the uncertainties of the collected data from the project site. A design begins with site investigations to define morphology, geology and geometry of the slope. A good cooperation between geologists and engineers is the base for the successful project. Once the information is obtained, a statistical parametric analysis on trajectories, velocities, bounds height and energies will be carried out. This analysis will allow the designer to adopt the appropriate rockfall solution in accordance with the safety coefficient applied to the uncertainties. The design can be based on the Service Energy Level (SEL) or Maximum Energy Level (MEL), depending on the frequency of events probability, installation and maintenance cost. The adoption of Rockfall Fence Kit designed in accordance with full scale crash tests (ETAG 027) is recommended in order to provide the values of loads and deformations acting through the fence. The location for the installation of the fence needs to take into account also the practicality of the site, in order to create a safe work environment for the installers. Both the design and on-site assistance by the manufacturer is always recommended for achieving the best final results, which is the safety of the people.
PRESENTER:
Ghislain Brunet has been working in the field of erosion control and rock slope stabilization for more than 25 years. He has implemented and organized the sales and the manufacturing of the rockfall mitigation products in the USA for Maccaferri. He has an MBA and a degree in engineering. He is a chairman on the ASTM International Committee for the Geohazard Protection Systems. He has been involved in developing ASTM standards for more than 15 years. He is vice-president and one of the founding members of the Association of Geohazard Professional.

and left into the garage. If exiting I-70 (from Balto, for ex), go north
on North on S. East Street, cross over canal, turn left on E. Patrick, Right
on Frederick and Right on Church into garage on left.
