There isn't a whole lot to say, other than to be aware of possibilities when one schedules trips in the southwest in July or August. We are on our way to Grand Canyon, and our route took us through the Mojave Desert during a particularly hot stretch of weather. I know that car thermometers are not at all the same as official weather stations, but mine has been accurate at lower temperatures.

 Devonian; US
On Saturday, I took my historical geology class on their field trip out to Corridor H, West Virginia. We made a stop at the Mahantango Formation outcrop exposed on the eastbound exit ramp near Baker, and poked around there for fossils. These Devonian-aged siltstones are chock full of invertebrates including rugose corals, crinoids, articulate brachiopods, and even trilobites. Here are two of the best fossils we encountered there: A trilobite

Blogs about science do not often have poetry, and when they do I suspect it’s not what most folks would call good poetry, but here is an exception, and I think you’ll agree, thanks to Harry Baker, it’s an exceptional exception. Baker is studying maths in the UK, and this Ted Talk is from an event in Exeter, a PRIME location, I should mention, to explore the beautiful south and

I have been on lots of boats but I’ve never had a birthday on-board before. Today I celebrated with a blue cake in the shape of a biology book that Abraham the baker made for me. I also received a handful of starburst sweets; a homemade magnet decorated with vampire squid, a poster with my name on, a box of marzipan French delicacies, 3 cards (two homemade) and lots of hugs and kisses. read

MOUNT AIRY, NC—The 12-year-old riverfront Convention Center in New Bern, NC was in trouble. The building's exterior is supported by pilings driven deep in the ground, but the floors sit directly on the earth and silt of the old riverbed. The land was in-filled by old docks and building debris in the 1970s and settling, erosion, and construction mistakes were taking their toll on the building. Parts of the floor and patio sunk up to seven inches, cracks and uneven joints in the concrete [...]
