While the majority of my vacation last fall was to Utah and Wyoming, I did a quick couple of days in Texas and Oklahoma. Texas was kind of a bonus for the visit as my primary goal was to collect in the prolifically fossiliferous exposures of lower Devonian aged rocks found around Clarita, Oklahoma. There are two main formations that are extremely productive, the Haragan formation and the Bois d'Arc formation. They are sequential formations, with the latter [...]

I'm really torn on how to classify these next fossils from the Kalkberg formation. To my eye they look like Rhipidomella sp., which is very common in middle Devonian aged rocks, but I cannot find any literature that lists that genus as being found in the Kalkberg formation. What I have been able to find lists shells that look similar to these as belonging to the genus Orthis. Doing a little research on the Fossilworks.org website indicates that both Rhipidomella and Orthis are part of the same [...]

When I saw the fossils below for the first time, though, I knew they looked familiar. They are Spinocyrtia elburzensis from Jebel Oufatene near Alnif in Morocco and they come from middle Devonian aged rocks (Emsian stage). They have a very striking resemblance to S. granulosa which is found in the Givetian stage rocks of New York.I posted [...]
