Why, yes. Yes they did. About two posts ago, I pointed out that there are some places where the geology is kind of...monotonous. One of those places is the vast sage plain east of Grand Canyon and Flagstaff, around the towns of Holbrook and Winslow (yes, that Winslow). The land is flat, windy and barren, hardly looking like a place of geological inspiration. And yet it is. In the last

This could be another aftershock to last November's M=4.8 earthquake

Houston, We Have Geology!Occasionally, I post various items that are not exotic or from faraway places. I'll be leaving for Alaska soon to run a wilderness river (the Tatshenshini) and so look for a post from that trip soon. In the meantime, here are a few odds and endsI just loved the above-the-fold headline in this mornings Arizona Daily Sun! Geology plays a prominent role in the upcoming New Horizons mission to Pluto. We had aftershocks on Wednesday from both of last year's more prominent earthquakes in Arizona. A magnitude 2.5 quake (orange dot  on AZ-NM border) is likely an aftershock to last June's M=5.3 Duncan earthquake.  It occurred at 3:50 p.m. local time on January 28.  The yellow dot is another aftershock, M=3.4 that occurred earlier in the week. Another magnitude 2.5 quake hit south of

Last night, a M4.7 earthquake occurred between Flagstaff and Sedona (just west of Munds Park). I hope it was not too scary for my friends and colleagues. It sounds like it got their attention! I agree with Professor Brumbaugh from NAU who said: "It was a large enough earthquake to be felt, but not quite large enough to really get too concerned about" (link). The USGS shakemap indicates that light shaking is reported from north Phoenix to north of Flagstaff. If you know someone who felt it; tell [...]

From USGS web siteA moderate 4.7 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Oak Creek Canyon woke me up here in Flagstaff just a few minutes before 11 PM last night. Woken from a moderate sleep, at first I knew it was an earthquake - but then passed it off as a dream and went back to sleep. It seemed to have a jolt followed by about 3 seconds of shaking that gradually diminished. The news coverage has been good this morning. The earthquake summary can be found here on the USGS web [...]

I’m sitting in the airport in Milan, Italy at the start of my long journey back to Flagstaff, Arizona*. I’ve had a wonderful week in Torino, Italy at the IAEG2014 Congress, which is held once every 4 years by IAEG. It was a very nice conference with a huge variety of attendees from around the world (those of us from the USA comprised of less than 2% of the 1100+ attendees). Italy and China

By Alexandra Branscombe WASHINGTON, DC – Just a week after a 21,000-acre wildfire between Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona, residents there are already bracing for mudslides that could surge down the burned slopes. These water-fueled flows of burned-out trees, loose rocks and mud can pack enough power to wipe out homes and roads. A new online hazard assessment system could help threatened communities in central Arizona and elsewhere in the western
