Last years INTERGEO in Berlin was an interesting experience for a newbie in the world of geodesy like I am. This year I will also attend the INTERGEO in Stuttgart. It will take place from the 15th to the 17th of September. This year’s main points: The spotlight will be on Geospatial 4.0, the digital economy, transformation through digitization, big data, the Internet of Things, digital infrastructures and smart cities. INTERGEO is all about “space”: gathering, storing, [...]

There's a great blog I found that gathers and displays geospatial data in innovative ways.    The IDV User Experience (uxblog) posted "Major Fires Since 2001" that includes wildfires, prescribed burns, and agriculture fires (such as the annual prairie fires in Kansas).   He followed up with a fire 'flipbook' (below) that layers maps for each year.  The heat values are taken from NASA

Water Risks for Industry in India – New Report from Columbia Water Center

Companies globally are increasingly focused on the emerging risk of water scarcity, and so are their investors. The combination of rising populations, rapid economic growth in developing countries, and climate variability is triggering enormous water availability challenges around the world. We are at a critical juncture where the crises of food, energy and water, commodity price volatility, energy reliability, and fears of whether food production will be enough calls for a rethinking of our [...]

The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI),  has released GeoFetch, a geoportal, that allows users to search, browse, preview, and download geospatial data created by the Institute. GeoFetch contains metadata for over one hundred base layers and SFEI mapping-related websites and services, including Bay Area Aquatic Resource Inventory (BAARI) data. To use GeoFetch, users must first register for a free account. The site includes a FAQ and a download page where users can quickly see what [...]

Federal Geographic Data Committee Launches New Geospatial Website

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The federal government and its geospatial partners today unveiled www.geoplatform.gov, a prototype Geospatial Platform website providing an initial view of the future of user-friendly, integrated, federal data collections on common geographic maps. This type of interface seems to be the future of GIS and mapping. Many agencies have something similar for their own data, but how great will it be when you can combine data sets from various sources to create your own maps? [...]

The USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP) is converting historical printed topographic quadrangles to an electronic format (GeoPDF). This scanning and processing effort serves the dual purpose of creating a master catalog and digital archive copies of the irreplaceable collection of topographic maps in the USGS Reston Map Library as well as making the maps available for viewing and
