Media skills for scientists – how to get them!

 GB,CN,US,
I certainly don’t need to write at any length about the fact I think it is crucial that scientists communicate their research with the public. Over the summer we’ll be sharing a few posts on this very subject. To get the ball rolling I thought I’d focus on one aspect of science communication (#scicomm): how to get your research out there to the media, be it written press, radio or TV. If I put my mind to it, I could write a little how-to-guide, but truth is, there are others [...]

Forecasts are getting Better, But The Public is Being Given Lousy Forecasts

Weather forecasts are much better than even a decade ago, and the change over the last 20 years has been remarkable, but in many cases, the weather forecast the average Joe gets has gotten worse. The good news is that it is fairly easy to get the best forecast possible, but getting the message out is not going to be easy. Here is the problem: I’veherad my fellow meteorologists call

Good news! Probably by now everyone’s heard about the European Union’s conclusions on the transition towards an Open Science system. This is progressive and positive, pretty much from start to finish. It’s so good that you should really read the whole thing — but here are some edited highlights: The Council of the European Union […] STRESSES

Click on the image below to go to a special NASA satellite image that you can drag across to see the flooding along the Brazos River in Texas. There is some good news here, because the flooding will taper off by late Sunday, and a hotter drier weather pattern will arrive in this area next week.

Chesapeake Bay Grasses Making a Comeback

My colleague Ty Butler did an excellent piece on our air (WBOC TV Eastern Shore of Maryland/Delaware) tonight about the recovery of the Chesapeake Bay grasses. This is really good news, and a sign that the health of the Bay is indeed improving. Ty has some great underwater photography in his piece, and it’s an exc. example of really good environmental science reporting. Call me impressed. Click the image below

Wow! Moment as Scientists Discover What’s Really Decimating The Cod Fishery

Dan\'s Wild Wild Science Journal [2015-10-30 03:03:49]  recommend  recommend this post  (147 visits) info
No doubt that overfishing has decimated the Cod fishery, but the extreme restrictions put on the Cod catch has done little or no good, and the numbers are now down to 3-4% of a sustainable fishery. Apparently, what was really happening has been staring us in the face for over a decade, and it’s not good news. To put it in science denier terms- “It’s the warming oceans stupid!” A

QGIS 2.8 (the new “Long Term Release”) was released a few days ago. It is a minor release according to the changelog but it will be supported in this setup at least for the next year: Some good news for all those working in a bigger, administrated environment as it is always a problem to update software in these bigger infrastructures. New features: >1000 issues flagged by static analysis tools fixed new code commits and pull requests are now automatically tests against our [...]

I am at a British research station, so Thanksgiving is not a celebrated holiday. I hope you had a wonderful time with family and/or friends. Here’s what I was greeted with this fine Thanksgiving morning: A gale blowing snow around in 30-40 knot winds! The bad news is that it was a very unpleasant day for walking between my dorm, the cafeteria, and the lab. The good news is that it hopefully pushed out that sea ice that was blocking our way to the islands, so once the weather clears, we should [...]

I listened to a fascinating interview on Science Friday from NPR Friday afternoon, and it’s good news for poultry producers/bad news for cattle ranchers.
