I met Pradeep when he joined the faculty at Fergusson College, Pune, during my second year B.Sc. He had a way with students

So she’s not moving again. A few days ago Bertha’s barge got tippy, then on Tuesday, the ground near her started to give way and a massive sink hole appeared. Today, we have Governor Inslee putting out a cease and desist order, immediately stopping any further work by Bertha. The old gal cannot get a … Continue reading Putting Bertha in
The PM 2.5 level reached over 310 ppm in Beijing Tuesday, and this level makes the air hazardous to breathe. In the U.S. (and most major countries), a level over 35 ppm is considered unhealthful. In Beijing, schools are closed and severe road restrictions are in force., and you can thank clean coal for the problem. Oh, and just in case you haven’t seen the most disastrous PR spot of all

I got back on Tuesday from OpenCon 2015 — the most astonishing conference on open scholarship. Logistically, it works very different from most conferences: students have their expenses paid, but established scholars have to pay a registration fee and cover their own expenses. That inversion of how things are usually done captures much of what’s

On the morning of Tuesday 1st December, on SVPCA day 1, I gave my talk about apatosaur neck combat. In one of the afternoon sessions, I sat next to Bob Nicholls, and found myself thinking how awesome it would be if he sketched some apato-combat. But I didn’t want to come right out and say “Hey, Bob, how ’bout you spontaneously
July 14, 2015 is going to be an important date in the history book of space exploration. At about 7:50 AM Tuesday, New York time, the New Horizons probe will pass about 12,500 km from Pluto, and the most sophisticated set of instruments ever put in deep space will record high resolution images of the dwarf planet.
