Not much in the way of "Geological wonders" in California Adventure in Disneyland, however there is one cool spot in Cars Land. The backdrop of the Radiator Springs Racers ride is the awesome looking panorama, evoking a southern Utah feel to it. They even provide a National Park Service type brochure explaining all of the features. The Ornament Valley Brochure is below. I tried to do a panorama shot on it but it is really hard to do that on an iPhone for a static picture so I also took an [...]
Do you know these places? Would a place that has cliffs like these merit being declared a national park?
Thankfully, these rocky precipices are in a national park already. But these are not the iconic features that end up in the photo collections of the millions of tourists that visit this place every year. But these cliffs contribute to the awesome scenery by serving as the backdrop

It will be the backdrop to a week-long programme of activities that will explore what it is like
My commute to work yesterday morning took an unexpected turn as my train pulled into my usual stop in Salford, Greater Manchester. To my right was a huge plume of smoke, which I would usually associate more with deforestation fires in Brazil! A plume of black smoke was rising up against the backdrop of beautifully
While at the University of Texas at Austin, where the Jackson School of Geosciences was hosting the Summit on the Future of Geoscience Education this past weekend, I was very impressed with the backdrop behind the main desk at the student center. It showed lovely meso- and macro- scale folds, and exquisite boudinage. I never found out the source or story behind this rock, but it’s certainly lovely. I’m sure
By Amy Karpati Despite having been regarded as a series of “externalities” by conventional systems of economic thinking, our natural environment is not merely a backdrop to human activities, but is the very base upon which all human systems are built. This reality is certainly not new to sustainability science, but it is easy to

Offered today is a photo journal, images taken during a moment of blissful quiet in Zion National Park late last month. I often volunteer with the park’s educational outreach program during the school year, and I was waiting for my next group of seventh graders to explode down the trail to the habitat station. It has been said by some people that the brilliance of southern Utah’s autumn pales pitifully in comparison to that of the eastern states. I respectfully [...]
After the visit to Blackgang and its monstrous 'dino-eyesores' which Marc wrote about in the last post, Marc and I headed on to Shanklin Chine, whose beauty almost deserves a post of its own here, if for no other reason than that the gorge could easily serve as a Mesozoic backdrop. The real purpose of this post, however, slight as it is, is this.Beyond the chine, the sands of Shanklin beach with its towering cliff face proved an irresistible impromptu canvas.Accounting for some [...]
Last Sunday James went for a run in the rain around a concrete military base. Having done the AGU "fun run" in torrential rain I had no inclination to repeat the experience, so stayed at home. The previous Sunday, however, we both got to enjoy seeing some real runners in the sunshine, with the backdrop of Viennese architecture. They passed very near our hotel at about 8km. And
It's been well over a year since I put together a post of origami dinosaurs, which is entirely too long. This time, I'm focusing on one artist. All of the pieces below have been designed and folded by paper artist Tran Trung Hieu, who shares work on Flickr as well as the Vietnam Origami Group. I'll kick this post off with a gorgeous Therizinosaurus. Love the feathery-fin detail on those majestic forelimbs. Here's one I'd not seen tried before: ribbon-tailed Epidexipteryx.Another refreshing [...]
Last month, I wrote of the balmy and sandy environs that made the backdrop to the wedding of the daughter of friends – on Australia’s North Stradbroke Island. Then, later last year, there was another wedding: the daughter of
The cross-hair in the Flash Earth image below is just behind home plate at the city's baseball field. Note the backstop...the Willow Creek Dam. Sure, it is pretty much the backdrop for the whole town, but the proximity to the ball field is just...so...close.

ArticleAlright people! With the backdrop of the devastation in Haiti fresh in people’s minds, New York insurance regulators are not ruling out a similar event in their own state, a key reason they say insurers should promote the opportunity to buy coverage for such a devastating occurrence. Here's something I found for Canada.Anyone who lives near a fault line - and that includes parts of
Voloubilis, a one of the pivotal cities in the expansion of Roman Empire, boasts a beautifully preserved basilica, triumphal arch, and columns of the Capitol Temple set against a backdrop of olive groves. The area is also home to paleontological remains from ages past. Massive trilobites and enormous elephant bones have been recovered from the fossil-rich
Again, sorry about the paucity of posts. Getting prepared to move 3/4 of the way across a continent will do that. Look for the next Volcano Profile, this time for Erebus in Antarctica, to be posted sometime in the next week or so.
We did get some news over the weekend of a large eruption at Shiveluch. The volcano in Kamchatka has been active all summer, but on Saturday it produced a 5,000 meter / ~23,000 foot ash plume. This was accompanied by 170 earthquakes and multiple avalanches, likely [...]
...but the West isn't buying it!"We don't need a new structure. We have many at our disposal -- U.N., EU, OSCE, Council of Europe. We have the principles, we have the structures, let's strengthen them," French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner told reporters. The ministerial meeting of the OSCE grouping European nations, the United States and Canada, took place against a backdrop of
Hello all,Here's a couple bones I saw in a private collection over winter break, and these left the collector and myself stumped. I have no idea what on earth this thing is, but it looks mammalian.Things to note: The concave part does look like an articulation, and the bones appear to be symmetrical. The larger of the two has some mud pellets cemented to it, so ignore those. The part of the rock unit this is from is latest Miocene-Pliocene, and is generally devoid of sirenians. The usual [...]
Two hills form the backdrop to the great city of Barcelona. To the southwest, overlooking the Mediterranean and the port, is Montjuic (the name ends in a "tch" sound in Catalan), a landscape that has played a role throughout
