Many of you will remember a hike I completed last October in southern Utah (link here). This year, a similar group of friends went into Grand Gulch, a marvelous little canyon located on Cedar Mesa. You can access the BLM web site for Grand Gulch here.I am including many photos from this six-day hike but little details on specific locations. A hike in Grand Gulch requires knowledge of changing conditions, stamina, and proper gear. It is a long ways away from help. But for those who are prepared, [...]

Every year I lead a group of travelers and hikers on a trip to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks for day hikes. The trips are part of the Museum of Northern Arizona's Venture's Program. This program has been functioning as one of the longest running natural history tour programs on the Colorado Plateau. This years trip saw great wildflowers, excellent weather, and congenial hikers!Locoweed blooming in Negro Bill Canyon. We all agreed that this canyon is in need of an updated name change. [...]

Last week we were camping along the Colorado River above Moab Utah when we saw these pillars showing how a more resistant chunk of sandstone will protect the less resistant shale below. The last blog post showed how the more resistant White Rim sandstone was left standing even after the softer Organ Rock shale had all eroded away leaving a really fun arch to visit.

Here is the continuation of the posting for my five-day trip to Canyonlands. This includes photo's and discussion from days 3, 4, and 5.On Wednesday we made the 2.5 mile hike along Negro Bill Creek to Morning Glory Arch. It is an impressive span in the Navajo Sandstone.View from beneath Morning Glory Arch. While we were here, a tour group arrived on top of the arch with the intent of rappelling down the 120 vertical feet. The rope thrown over the edge nearly hit our party! One of my favorite [...]

CO2 Sequestration Potential in Arizona

Jon Spencer, Arizona Geological Survey, shares results of an early sequestration potential study for basins in Arizona. It focused on basins with depths below 800 meters – the depth at which CO2 will remain in the liquid state. Successful sequestration also requires adequate permeability/porosity for large-volume CO2 injection and an impermeable cap rock that will

May 2nd 2010 -The TBM is at 6,882 meters (22,578.4 feet). The TBM has been shutdown for scheduled maintenance and to allow for the launch of the arch forms into the tunnel. On May 11th, the widening of the new air vent shaft will begin.Well, the fire didn't slow them a bit! They are having lots of fun zooming through the cap rock at a tremendous speed. No word on how well they are doing

What a fabulous President's Day, a ski tour atop the "largest flat topped mountain in the world". The Grand Mesa is a large mesa found in western Colorado. I am not sure who decided that it was so special, but I read it on the Internet...so it must be true. The top of the mesa is covered by lava flows dated at 10,000,000 years ago. These lava flows make quite a nice cap rock and have
