The Lull Before Asut-Tesoru...

It's been a rather quiet couple days here on the JR, as the drillers have been diligently drilling what will ultimately become a 200 m cased drill hole with an ROV landing pad on top, for future instrumentation and use as a venue for real-time measurements of the unusual upwelling fluids we encountered at Yinazao Seamount. read more

Innovative Micropile Construction with DTH System

Our friends at Deep Excavation posted about an interesting micropile case study in Northern Baltimore County for a bridge replacement project. The project consisted of 38 Micro Piles; 7” OD X 38 ft. deep including a 7 ft. rock socket, installed on a 3/1 batter, load tested to 272,000 lbs. What caught my attention is the down the hole hammer system used for installing the micropiles. The system uses a ring bit to install the casing and allow the drill string to continue beneath the bedrock [...]

Today we are still waiting to get back to coring as the final stages of re-entering the hole after the casing is completed. This gives us the chance to thank our valiant technical staff that help keep all the labs running smoothly on a daily basis. read

Re-entry Cone Deployed

It had been put together a few days ago but today was the day that the re-entry cone was finally deployed and made its journey down to the bottom of the sea floor ready to help us fit the casing and also to enter and reenter the hole several times. read

Downhole logging

Now that we have drilled down to the depths that we need before setting casing and drilling a very deep hole all the way to the basement we have decided to stop and measure downhole geophysical logs. This is a method in which sensors are deployed down the borehole to record different aspects of the physical properties of rocks. read

Site U1440B activity; A unique way to install a reentry system

Since we have already drilled a hole at Site U1440 (approximately 20 meters from where we are now) and collected sediment cores from that hole up until we hit hard rock, we started our second hole in a whole new way. Because this hole will be used to obtain cores from deeper depths we need to 'case' the hole to keep it stable. We also need to be able to re enter it several times. read

Update on Access Pit for Repairing Bertha TBM

 US,ST
There hasn’t been much to report recently for the Alaskan Way Viaduct Tunnel Project in Seattle. As you probably know, Bertha has not advanced since about December of 2013 after drilling through an abandoned steel well casing left over from engineering studies. Whether it was the casing or boulders, or something else that damaged the seals around the giant TBM’s cutterhead, they have some major repair planned.  If you like, feel free to read more about what happened with [...]

We’re just over three weeks in to our trip, the casing is set, the drill crew is tripping out the pipe (POOHing-Pulling out of hole) and is at present is preforming a “cut and slip” which means replacing ~35meters of cable which travel over the crown sheave and hold our heavy (500,000+ lb) drill string. read

On May 9th, 2014 the JOIDES Resolution set a new record for it’s deepest set casing, beating the old record by 19 meters (leg 186 hole 1151B)!!! The Siem offshore crew set casing down to 1,087 meters below sea floor (mbsf), that’s about 0.7 miles of casing! But what is casing? read

WSDOT Denies $125M Change Order for Seattle Tunnel Partners

 ST
The WSDOT announced recently that the Seattle Tunnel Partners Joint Venture has requested a total of $188 million in change orders so far, and that the Department has denied $157 million of those, with $31 million worth still under review. Among the change orders rejected was one for $125 million plus additional contract time because STP claimed the Bertha TBM was damaged by a steel well casing. WSDOT's position is that the location of the well casing was included in the contract documents. [...]

Just a quick note to keep everyone updated on activities onboard the JR. The last several cores have come up less than perfect, showing signs of problems with the bit or the material we're drilling into. Some of the last core contained lots of drilling mud, which looked like chocolate milk, not a good sign. read

The wind gods appear to have been appeased for the time being at least as we are now enjoying our best conditions here for several days under blue skies if still somewhat of the breeze from the direction of the Philippines. This means that the job of casing can go on and bring us a day close to the return of core. read

Our wait for the return of core began in earnest today as the casing started to be hung from the newly installed re-entry cone. The first to go is the 20” diameter pipe through which the progressively smaller and smaller “stands” of casing are fed and then cemented into place, to form the string of metal tubing that will line the upper part of the hole. read

New Site Preparations

Now we are at our new drilling site preparations have begun for the deep drilling we will attempt here, around 1900 m below the seafloor. Today tests were conducted to determine the stiffness of the seafloor, which will have to bear the weight of the re-entry cone (see photo) that in turn is the device from which the casing that protects the top of the hole will be hung. read
