Mountain lions captured consuming a deer in incredible remote-camera pictures

Hill lion discoveries in California aren’t unusual, but the predators try to stay out of view and also stalk their victim mainly from twilight right into the evening, so it’s not all that frequently we obtain this up close and personal with the large cats. Many thanks to the Santa Monica Mountains National Entertainment Area, […] The post Mountain lions captured consuming a deer in incredible remote-camera pictures appeared first on Liberty, Equality, and

Today's fossil is Delthyris sculptilis which is an appropriate name due to the high relief and heavy decoration on the shell. D. sculptilis has a long hinge line connecting the pedicle and brachial valves. Each valve is deeply incised by plications to the point that there does not appear to be a lot of room for the body. The shell has very obvious growth lines that help decorate the shell and perhaps prevented predators or parasites from gaining a foothold.Brachial valveAnteriorPedicle [...]

Anurognathus ammoni makes itself like a tree, but doesn't leave. Prints are available.Last week I unceremoniously dumped several revamped pterosaur images on the blog after they were prepared for a talk on one of my favourite topics - pterosaur functional morphology and biomechanics. Turned out that I wasn't quite done tinkering with old images however, because another piece - above - was set for 11th hour reworking. It shows one of the subject taxa of my talk - an anurognathid pterosaur - [...]

Close your eyes. Go back in time 250 million years, and the world would seems as strange to you as a different planet. On land, there was a whole host of bizarre and now extinct animals: strange, crocodile-like things, and the precursors of dinosaurs; weird mammal-like beasts, that looked like the lost offspring of a hippo and a monitor lizard. In the seas, marine reptiles dominated. A whole range of unusual animals lived, such as the long-necked plesiosaurs, popularised with reference to the [...]

Biogeographic Chaos Revisited

In his 1986 book The Dinosaur Heresies Bakker maintained that dinosaur extinction resulted from biogeographic chaos. In this view, falling sea levels enabled formerly separated faunas to emigrate and mix. In the process dinosaurs everywhere were exposed to unfamiliar parasites, predators and diseases, for which they had no natural defenses. The putative result was moribund ecosystems

The gigantic brachiopod fossil shown below is an Atrypa reticularis that I found in the Edgecliff member of the Onondoga formation. The size is rather remarkable to me but seems to be a similar trend in other brachiopods that I found at the same site. I guess the environment was rich enough to support individuals for a long period of time and storm events or predators were few.My initial ID was confirmed after reading  - STRATIGRAPHY OF THE ONONDAGA LIMESTONE (DEVONIAN) IN CENTRAL NEW YORK [...]

A bizarre marine creature that roamed the oceans 425 million years ago has been revealed in unprecedented detail. The strange animal, named Enalikter aphson, was just under an inch (2.4cm) long and had a round head, no eyes and a whip like 'tongue' protruding from its mouth that it used to catch tiny sea creatures. At the end of its body there was a pincer attached to a primitive tail that may have been used as a weapon against predators. The extinct arthropod did not have a hard shell but was [...]

Kryptops advantages: 1. Had powerful jaws (To dig deeper into flesh) 2. Was a specialized hunter (Could use its specialties against prey) 3. Could replace teeth (Made it resilient to any dentary damage) disadvantage: 1. Less massive than Ouranosaurus (Made it harder to take Ouranosaurus down) Ouranosaurus advantages: 1. Had thumbspike (To wound predators) 2. Was more massive ( Made it harder to

The most remarkable part is the realization that the predators actually butchered their prey, cutting the

It was starting to cool a little in early September and I braved a run to work. To wile away the time I decided to count hornets and, in about 45 minutes, got to 29. In the weeks that followed the numbers dwindled. It was the year of the plague of hornets, but now it is almost all over. New predators have arisen! Hornets like to use the human-made paths in the thick forest vegetation. They
