Inarticulate brachiopods from the Bois d'Arc formartion

The Bois d'Arc formation has some inarticulate brachiopods that can be found but they are often fragile and weather away quickly. I was fortunate enough to find two examples of varying preservation. I can't locate any literature that describes species that could be found and it appears that the inarticulate brachiopods were ignored by Amsden when he initially described the brachiopod fauna from the Lower Devonian of Oklahoma. The first is a Lingula type specimen. I am not sure if the shell is [...]

I found this specimen of a spiny productid brachiopod at Conger Springs, Utah. I believe it is an example of the genus Inflatia. I am unsure as to the species because the preservation is not the best. It was a spiny brachiopod but not as spiny as a similar genus, Juresania.  The pedicle valve is very convex while the brachial valve is flat to slightly convex and the margins of both meet at a 90 degree angle to the brachial valve.  Both valves are decorated with linear costae but only [...]

Maintain The Cleanliness of Rivers

Nowadays, almost every human being a lot less worried to maintain the preservation of character. They were being too chaotic with the environment of work and don’t pay back focus on the natural situations that were damaged. One of these could be the river. Therefore, in this article we tell some tips on how to […] The post Maintain The Cleanliness of Rivers appeared first on Liberty, Equality, and

So, for two weeks we find ourselves in France. Gif-sur-Yvette on the outskirts of Paris to be precise, the location of the CNRS site where we are staying in the very impressive chateau de ville (preservation of which was apparently a requirement of taking on the site). The visit is courtesy of Masa Kageyama at LSCE-IPSL-CEA-CNRS and our first lesson was to learn what all the acronyms

Mioplosus labracoides fish head from the Green River Formation

I purchased this fish fossil from a collector just because of it's size and preservation. The collector didn't know what the genus of fish it was but I did a little digging and I think it's a Mioplosus labracoides. The fossil was collected from the Green River formation near Kemmerer, Wyoming (Paleogene, Eocene epoch, Ypresian stage). I have not yet found any Mioplosus fossils myself so this filled a hole in the collection as well as being a cool looking

This morning was my last bit of the GSA annual meeting in Denver, and the session I attended was about a subject dear to my heart, the preservation of geologically interesting places. As geologists we care about all kinds of odd things that most people either don't notice or use without knowing anything geological about it. But there are "hooks" in almost every such place that connect it to the community around it, and here a wonderful talk by Edward Stermer presented a great example: the [...]

I have lots of fossils from my younger collecting days that have no label or sparse information. Some are among my favorites but with little info they get relegated to Random Fossil Posts. Two such samples are featured today with the first being this pair of slabs cut from, presumably, a stromatolite. Based on the preservation I'd say they are likely from the Wamsutter area of Wyoming on the Green River formation Next up is this Gryphaea sp. shell. It is one of my favorites because it's in [...]

Geotechnical Asset Management, Implementation Concepts and Strategies

The Central Federal Lands (CFL) division of the FHWA has published a new manual on Geotechnical Asset Management. Here's the abstract: The purpose of transportation asset management is to meet life-cycle performance goals (safety, mobility, preservation, economics, and environmental aspects) through the management of physical assets in the most cost-effective manner. Geotechnical asset management can be incorporated into the broader practice of transportation asset management. Currently, [...]

A few months back I bought a pair of Eucalyptocrinus crinoid calyx from a seller on E-bay. The one that interested me the most is the Eucalyptocrinus elrodi pictured below.Note the small bumps on the surface of the calyx plates. This is the diagnostic feature that separates this species from the others. The fossil is missing it's arms which is a very typical mode of preservation. Apparently the calyx was somewhat solidly built and held together longer than the arms did once the animal died. The [...]
