biomodel: generic gorgonopsid

So I’m modeling a gorgonopsid for Christian Kammerer. A bunch of them, actually. And I’ve started with a biomechanical model. Not a skeleton. Skeletons are a lot of work, but there are more convincing arguments to come up with an abstracted model of the skeleton… we often do not have skeletons, or they have to

Fossil mammals don’t get the attention they deserve. If you’ve ever been to the sprawling fossil halls of one of the great eastern museums – the American Museum of Natural History, the Field, the Carnegie, the Peabody – you know what I mean. The skeletons of ancient camels, horses, cats, sloths, and their beastly kin

My friend Gery sent me some specimens of Belemnitella mucronata from the Toarcian stage aged (Jurassic) rocks in Vendee Department, France. They are small and show the typical round cross sections. Had they not been labelled I would not be able to tell them apart from many other Belemnite fossils. These are just the internal "skeletons" of squid like animals that were surrounded by soft tissue and mostly were used to anchor

Of course I'm sad -- very sad -- to see 'Dippy' retire (no, I don't much care for the name either, but [...]

Wooster’s Fossil of the Week: A stromatoporoid from the Silurian of Estonia

Stromatoporoids are extinct sponges that formed thick, laminated skeletons of calcite. They can be very common in Silurian and Devonian carbonate units, sometimes forming extensive reefs. The stromatoporoid above is Densastroma pexisum (Yavorsky, 1929) collected from the Mustjala Member of the Jaani Formation (Silurian, Wenlock) exposed on Saaremaa Island, Estonia. It was part of Rob

There is a bed present within the Wanakah shale member of the Ludlowville formation (Devonian, Givetian stage) called the "Pleurodictyum bed". As may be guessed, the coral Pleurodictyum americanum is common within the layers of this zone. Below are a couple of examples that I found along the shore line of Lake Erie. They stand out for me because of the substrate they colonized.Specimen #1 is narrow because it started on the shell of a Paleozygopleura sp. gastropod. Specimen #2 chose a section [...]
