At the Assembly: Monday highlights

Welcome to the 2015 General Assembly! This is the first full day of sessions and there’s a feast of them to choose from. Every day we’ll be sharing some super sessions and events at EGU 2015 here on GeoLog and you can complement this information with EGU Today, the daily newsletter of the General Assembly. Of particular importance today is the Union’s Plenary Meeting (UM17) at 12:15 in Room Y1 – it’s a forum for all Assembly attendees to discuss the development of the Union with the Union Council. Seeing as it’s over lunch, a buffet of scrumptious sandwiches and soft drinks will be served at the event. Today also features the first of the Assembly’s Great Debates – Impact on global geoscience of accelerating Asian research (GDB2). This Great Debate is co-organised by the EGU and AOGS (the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society) and will discuss how accelerating scientific and technological research in Asia impacts the geosciences on a global scale. Join in the debate from 15:30–17:00 in Y1. You can follow the session on Twitter with #EGU15GDB, and, if you’re not attending, tune in with the conference live stream. Several short courses are starting up to including workshops on how to make your own plate tectonic reconstructions on GPlates (SC20/TS10.2, 18:00–20:30 / Room B13), how to write and publish a paper in soil science journals (SC5/SSS0.17, 19:00–20:15 / Room B2) and why you should bother with open science, public engagement and outreach (SC22: 17:30–19:00 / Room B1). There are also scintillating scientific sessions throughout the day. Here’s just a sample of what’s on offer: Aircraft-based observation of the atmosphere and atmosphere-surface exchange processes (AS4.19/GI2.4, orals: 08:30–10:00 / Room B10, posters: 17:30–19:00 / Blue Posters) Stable isotopes and novel tracers in biogeochemical and atmospheric research (BG1./AS2.4, orals: 13:30–17:15 / Room G4, posters: 17:30–19:00 / Green Posters) Communication of uncertain information in Earth sciences: data, models and visualization (SSS11.5/ESSI3.6/HS12.7/NH9.17, orals: 13:30–17:15 / Room B2, posters: 17:30–19:00 / Blue Posters) Rosetta: first results from the prime mission (PS4.1, orals: 13:30–17:15 / Room Y5, posters: 17:30–19:00 / Red Posters) Today also features two super Medal Lectures, which are sure to be a great source of inspiration: Five reasons not to use numerical models in water resource management (ML7: Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Young Scientists Lecture by Francesca Pianosi, 15:30–16:00 / Room R6) Closing the balance (ML19: Louis Agassiz Medal Lecture by Michiel van den Broeke, 19:00–20:00 / Room R1) Finally, remember to take the opportunity to meet your Division’s representatives in the day’s Meet EGU sessions and, if you’re in need of a break, head on over to GeoCinema, where you can kick back and relax with a geoscientific film (10:30–19:00 daily in the GeoCinema Room on the Blue Level).
